Matfield Green Works

Specific Need

Matfield Green Works owns two properties across from each other on US Highway 177, also known as the Flint Hills Scenic Byway, rated one of the 10 most iconic drives in the U.S. Thousands of locals, commuters, workers, tourists, day trippers, bird watchers, train enthusiasts, bike riders, motorcyclists, artists, photographers, and writers use the Byway every year generating more than $465,000 of direct economic impact annually and serving as the gateway to the Flint Hills.

While named a must-do experience by many tourism groups, the Byway which stretches from Council Grove to Cassoday, until now has had no readily accessible restroom. While toilets and water don't seem like a big deal to many, the fact that they are not easily available, prevents many from being able to connect with the Flint Hills. A beautiful day trip or bike tour can become a nightmare if there is no accessible rest area.  To solve this problem, Matfield Green Works is transforming one of their properties into "The Green", a handicapped accessible restroom and multi-use mini park. Not only will there be the much-needed restroom, but off-street parking, potable water, bike repair and washing station, sheltered picnic area, native landscaping, and interactive art. There is no public or governmental money available for this project and it is being completely funded by private donations from people like you who love the Flint Hills. We have raised enough to begin the project, but we still need funds to complete Phase 2 which includes the bike station, landscaping, lighting, signage, map, picnic shelter, commissioned art peice, and maintenance.

Matfield Green Works also need funds to start work on renovating the second property, "The Bank", which is the last historic storefront left in Matfield Green. This future art space and visitors center needs a new roof to kickstart the renovation of this unique building.

Mission

Connecting people to the earth and to each other.

Profile

Matfield Green (population 50 more or less) has captured the imaginations of visitors from all over the world. Located in the heart of the Flint Hills, this ranching community was founded on balancing environment and economics, and attracts those seeking to escape urban life, if even for a day. The stunning prairie scenery draws creative people and adventurers to it like a magnet, bringing significant cultural and economic impact to the region. From this rich soil, the non-profit Matfiled Green Works organization was born.

First established in 2013, Matfield Green Works has promoted "connecting people to the earth and to each other" through a series of art exhibitions, performances, educational programs, and community gatherings. Matfield Green Works has now turned from events to two larger projects. "The Green", is an accessible rest area and gathering space slated to finish in late 2024.  "The Bank" will be an art and visitors center in the last historic commercial building left in Matfield Green. Both of these projects require larger financial support than our previous programs but promise to ensure future generations are able to engage with the timeless beauty of the Flint Hills. Matfield Green Works is very fortunate to have the help of talented architects, artists, designers, and horticulturalists who have generously donated their professional services, as well as the work of our amazing cadre of dedicated volunteers, board members, and partners who live all over the US and beyond but have a special place in their heart for Matfield Green. We welcome you to become a friend and supporter too!
